It will cover everything in the notes from the Empress Elizabeth and Catherine the Great through the Enlightenment and however far we get by Wednesday.

In the readings it will cover pages 475-480, 510-517 (stop at The Later Enlightenment).

Questions For Your Papers

Here are the questions for your papers. Please write only on the topic you volunteered for. I will return your quiz today, so be sure to hold onto it and look on the back of the paper if you forget your topic!!! If you write on a different topic, there will be a twenty point deduction taken from your paper!!! Also, if you did not attend class on Friday and did not inform me ahead of time as to your topic, you have an automatic -10. (You know who you are...there are some consistent skippers in this class and they are going to pay the price!)

Your paper should be typed in a reasonable font, and be between 2-4 pages in length. It needs a title, but you are not to put the question at the top of the paper. You should answer the question thoroughly and thoughtfully, in essay form. You are not to do outside research---this is about how you respond to an assigned reading. You will be graded on how well you answer the question (content) and on how well you write (composition). You should not have spelling mistakes or grammatical errors. Please note--this paper is to be your own work. You need to sign it like the honor code. DO NOT use the writing lab or an outside reader, and do not discuss it with your classmates. Please treat it like a quiz.

Also, in writing, you are welcome to use the first person--"I believe that Ivan was the worst ruler ever" or "I'm glad I didn't live in the 14th century." Avoid the use of "you"---"You know that Ivan was awesome" or "You are always aware of history." Expect to lose points if you do this!!!!!

The paper is not due until Monday, April 26, in class. However, if you finish the paper and turn it in by class time on Friday, I will give you a bonus point on it!!!!

You will turn in a hard copy to me, but be sure to save a copy as an electronic file, in case I need it.

Dear HIS Students--here are the results of the 2nd exam. I did get everyone's test graded, but because we had a few people who were sick and will have to make the test up, I can not hand papers back for a few days. I will have your grades, however.

What I am about to say next is strictly to try and help people who may feel that they are struggling with this course!

I know that several people in class are considering dropping (WP). It is my policy to allow you to withdraw passing no matter what your grade is. But should a student drop? That is a decision that I can not make for anyone---only the student can make it! I will say this---you should never drop my course just because you have figured that you won't make an A in it. I certainly don't expect everyone to make As!!! I understand that for most people, history is nothing but 'boring stuff about dead people' and that not matter how hard I work to make it relevant or entertaining, some folks just will never warm up to it. I also realize that some people think my standards are too high, but I am not going to lower them---I feel that Wofford has a reputation to uphold and that if you want easy classes, well, there are some other schools you could go to, right? And I understand that if you get off to a bad start, it may be impossible to catch up, and that many people just don't click with my style of teaching. There's nothing wrong or insulting to me when a student drops. I hate to lose you, but I only want what is best for you.

If you have a borderline situation and you aren't sure whether you should drop or not, consider these factors:

*Can I devote more time to studying for this class?

*Am I will to take some time with a tutor---Wofford has a free tutoring program!

*Am I willing to talk to the instructor and ask questions when I don't understand something.

*Can I pay more attention in class? Do I have any bad habits that are hurting me (like texting in class, talking, daydreaming, etc.)

*Am I willing to never skip class?

*Do I have another class that is more important to me than this class, and that I am also struggling with?

*Would I be better off to take this in summer school, where I can give all my time and energy to one class?

Please don't ask me to work the grade math for you! You can look at the syllabus and do your own figuring!!!!

If dropping is not an option for you and you are really worried about your grade, please set up a time to talk to me and perhaps go over some of your work. I WANT you to SUCCEED! But that may mean a lot of extra time and effort if history is not your favorite subject. And please, if what you are struggling with is not history but another type of issue---poor health, anxiety, roommate problems, time management, etc.---please seek help from the appropriate people. Wofford has a lot of great services for its students. If you don't know who you should consult, talk to me and I will help you get to the right person.

I know that maybe some of you think I am mean. That's OK, you can think what you want. But I know that I care about my students and I want you to get something out of this class, something more meaningful than just a grade. So please, when you get your grade tomorrow, think seriously about this class and your future in it!

HIS 101: Western Civilization, 1400-1815

Course Objectives

This course is designed to provide students with a basic survey of the history of western civilization from the Renaissance to Napoleon. Students should be able to identify important personalities and understand how political, religious, social, economic and intellectual forces of this period helped shape the modern world. Students will also develop their skills in independent reading, writing, and in-class communication.

Course Relationship to History Department Goals

This course helps the history department reach its goals by covering the following dimensions of history widely perceived as crucial for a well-rounded view of the world:

*political developments

*significant intellectual movements and debates

*socio-cultural issues of race and ethnicity

* class

*gender

Students will also gain some exposure to how history is practiced by

*learning how history is interpreted

*assessing and critiquing arguments made by historians

*evaluating and using secondary sources; reading selected primary sources

*writing a critical thinking paper and using technology

During the course, students will consider issues that provide an important perspective on the contemporary world. The instructor will provide material in lectures and questions to help the students see the origins of many of the ideals and institutions that students often take for granted.

Class Attendance

Since this class revolves primarily around lectures, regular attendance is necessary for student success. Because of the large size of this class, and the nature of the “pit,” students will be responsible for signing a class attendance sheet. Students who miss more than three days of class will receive an attendance warning. If a student misses more than four days of class, the student’s grade will be automatically dropped by one full letter grade.

Student absences are excused for the following reasons:

Participation in a school-sponsored event, such as a field trip or a football game

Major personal illness

Death in the family

If a student knows that he/she will miss a day of class ahead of time, he/she should tell the instructor. A missed class without warning will require documentation, such as a letter from a doctor.

Any missed work, such as an exam, may be made up only at the professor’s discretion (during finals week) and will be in a different, much more challenging format.

Exams

Two exams and a final will be given. Each exam consists of objective questions (true/false, matching, etc) and subjective (essays). Material from lectures, readings, and quizzes will be covered.

Quizzes

A quiz will be given on most Fridays of the semester. These will be very short quizzes, a combination of true/false and identification questions. Each quiz will be given at the end of class. Quizzes may NOT be made up for any reason, even an excused absence. The lowest two quiz grades will be automatically dropped before the final quiz average is figured. Quizzes will incorporate material from the readings and from the lectures. The readings for each week will be posted on the class blog on Friday!

Paper

Students will write a 2-4 page essay based on a reaction to an assigned reading. (Reading TBA) Students will have some choice in the selection of the essay topic. The paper will count as one quiz grade. It may not be exempted, though the grade may be dropped if it is one of the student’s two lowest quiz grades.

No grade will be given for any late papers!

Honor Code

All students are required to abide by the terms of the Wofford Honor Code. Students are encouraged to study together for quizzes and exams, but papers are solo projects. Quizzes and tests are also solo projects.

Classroom Etiquette

Wofford College students are expected to behave like young adults, not like refugees from high school! Students in this class will treat their peers and their professor with respect and courtesy! This includes arriving to class on time properly clad and TURNING OFF and STOWING all cell phones/ipods/etc. before class begins!!!!! Texting in class is not allowed. Students are reminded that professors have the right to dismiss them from class and even remove them from class permanently for violating these rules.

Essay Prompt

If you are one of the FEW people who does classwork over the break, here's a 'doorbuster' for you. Here is the prompt for the essay you will write based on your reading in Renaissance Lives.

"Based on this essay, what 'life lessons' should college students learn from the life of X (the person in the essay)."

So if you read on Catherine de Medici, your prompt would be "Based on this essay, what 'life lessons' should college students learn from the life of Catherine de Medici?"

Please keep in mind how I like to make this point in class; I always say that we can learn from people in the past. Remember how I said that you could use Elizabeth I's council as a good example of how to seek advice, by asking advice from small but diverse groups of people? Or how the Mongols taught future ruthless leaders NOT to let an oppressed people keep their religious faith because they would eventually use that faith against their overlords? This is the kind of thinking that you should do!

I want to read essays that are thoughtful and reflect time spent with the biographies provided. Do NOT go out and do further research; this essay looks at how well you read and think about the work I have given to you.

And one pet peeve---while I am perfectly happy with you using the first person in your paper ("I think Jan Hus teaches me to always follow my conscience, even if it gets me in trouble.") I can not abide the use of second person ("You should be like Jan Hus and you should always tell the truth.") So please do not use it! If you do use it, you will lose many points and I will know that you did not pay attention to instructions.

Remember that the essay asks you about college students! So think about things you and your peers could learn, lessons that would be especially essential at this time in your life.

Here again are the basic rules for the essay! And obviously, I am giving you the prompt a bit early if you are reading this blog!

On November 30, I will give you a question based on your reading. You will have one week to work on the paper. It will be due on December 7. The paper should be 2-3 pages, typed, properly spaced, and with a title.

Also---feel free to take this paper to the Writing Center. I don't mind them giving you some help.

To begin your paper assignment, you need to go to the library and read a selection from a book that is on reserve for you. The book is called Renaissance Lives: Portraits of an Age and the author is Theodore K. Rabb. The book is at the circulation desk.

Renaissance Lives is a collection of essays about famous people (and some not-so-famous) who lived in the time period covered by HIS 101. Each essay is approximately the same length.

Choose ONE person to read about. Pick someone you are interested in! Or choose by topic---if you like art, you might want to pick Artemisia Gentileschi. If science is more your thing, you might try Galileo. Choose ONE essay, and either take notes from it or make a copy of it. DO NOT TAKE THE BOOK FROM THE LIBRARY OR YOU WILL BE IN BIG TROUBLE!

On November 30, I will give you a question based on your reading. You will have one week to work on the paper. It will be due on December 7. The paper should be 2-3 pages, typed, properly spaced, and with a title.

For right now, what is important is that you get to the library, choose an essay, read it and start thinking about its subject. I think you will enjoy this assignment!

Also---there were entirely too many absences in class on Friday. I do not for a minute believe that everyone in class had the swine flu or is on the football team and had to leave before noon! I told the students who were in class today NOT to give out their notes to people who 'took the day off' or 'left for Fall House early.' If you were genuinely sick or had a real emergency, I hope you will come see me or get help to catch up---otherwise, I hope you will be 'grown up' enought to accept the consequences of your actions and realize that you missed a lot of important material today and you will pay the price for it on your next quiz and your final exam.

Course Objectives

Course Relationship to History Department Goals

This course helps the history department reach its goals by covering the following dimensions of history widely perceived as crucial for a well-rounded view of the world:

*political developments

*significant intellectual movements and debates

*socio-cultural issues of race and ethnicity

* class

*gender

Students will also gain some exposure to how history is practiced by

*learning how history is interpreted

*assessing and critiquing arguments made by historians

*evaluating and using secondary sources; reading selected primary sources

*writing a critical thinking paper and using technology

During the course, students will issue issues that provide an important perspective on the contemporary world. The instructor will provide material in lectures and questions to help the students see the origins of many of the ideals and institutions that students often take for granted.

Class Attendance

Since this class revolves primarily around lectures, regular attendance is necessary for student success. Because of the large size of this class, and the nature of the Theater, students will be responsible for signing a class attendance sheet. Students who miss more than three days of class will receive an attendance warning. If a student misses more than four days of class, the student’s grade will be automatically dropped by one full letter grade.

Student absences are excused for the following reasons:

Participation in a school-sponsored event, such as a field trip or a football game
Major personal illness
Death in the family

If a student knows that he/she will miss a day of class ahead of time, he/she should tell the instructor. A missed class without warning will require documentation, such as a letter from a doctor.

Any missed work, such as a quiz or exam, may be made up only at the professor’s discretion (during finals week) and will be in a different, much more challenging format.

Exams

Two exams and a final will be given. Each exam consists of objective questions (true/false, matching, etc) and subjective (essays). Material from lectures, readings, and quizzes will be covered.

Quizzes

Three quizzes will be given during the semester. Students should think of these as ‘mini-tests’. They will incorporate material from the readings and from the lectures (see schedule). A quiz missed for an unexcused absence may NOT be made up.

Paper

Students will write a 2-4 page essay based on a reaction to an assigned reading. (Reading TBA) Students will have some choice in the selection of the essay topic.

The paper will count as one quiz grade. It may not be exempted, though it may be dropped as the lowest grade if the student takes all four regular quizzes.

No grade will be given for any late papers!

This semester, your writing assignment is optional. If you do it, it will count as a quiz grade. This will allow you to drop your lowest quiz grade; only the three highest quiz grades will be averaged. If you choose NOT to do the writing assignment, you will not have a quiz grade to drop.

Here is the assignment:

The book Renaissance Lives: Portraits of an Age is on reserve for you in the library. It is a collection of essays about famous people who lived during the time period covered in our class. I would like you to pick the person you would most like to have dinner with! (Now, obviously, you can't have dinner with them anywhere except in your imagination, but that's the point!) In your essay, describe your 'dinner with X.' I want to know what you are curious about, and how you think--based on what you have read in the biographical essay--that the person would answer. At some point in your essay (which may be written as a short story) I would like for you to address the idea of how this individual personifies the 'Renaissance' spirit.

Your essay should be at least 2-3 pages in length. It should be written in proper English! It should be typed and double spaced. It does require you to do any outside research---use ONLY the reading assigned. If you quote directly from the text, be sure to cite the page number in brackets at the end of the quote.

This is to be YOUR work! I will permit you to run it by the writing lab, but if you do so, please inform me of it in a separate note.

The essay is due NO LATER than the start of class on May 4. I will not accept any papers after that time, for any reason.

What am I looking for? I am seeking:

*A well constructed essay or story

*Vivid use of the imagination

*A demonstration that you have both read and thought about the material

*Ability to follow instructions

*Good composition; no typos or misspellings

If I have the sense that this paper was slapped together at the last minute, the grade will reflect that! If it reads that way, that's the grade it will receive.

I hope this assignment will be fun for you. Please choose a person you are actually interested in! For example, if you are interested in science, you might want to have dinner with Galileo. Or if you are into religion, you might want to take Jan Hus down to Zachs. Don't be afraid to use some humor, but be sure that you also discuss serious ideas and get to the heart of why this person would be considered a man or woman of the Renaissance!

I think I will have most, if not all of the tests graded by tomorrow. I do not want to give them back until everyone has taken the exam, and there were lots of absences on Wednesday. Wofford must be the 'plague village' or something!

I will plan on giving a make-up exam (which will be in a different format) on TUESDAY, April 14 at 5:30. This is the only time I will offer a make-up. The test will be give in room 102 in Old Main.

Here are some things to think about as you're studying:

Do you know the story of the Tudor dynasty from the Wars of the Roses through the coronation of Elizabeth I? It's a pretty wild and sexy story, with lots of love, lust, and religion. (No wonder Showtime has a series about it!)

We learned about Luther last time---but what about Calvin and Zwingli this time? And what is up with the Anabaptists anyway?

Those crazy Frenchmen! Why did they want to smite each other over religion? Did anything good come out of those wars of religion?

So, would you have wanted to have been a sailor in the Age of Exploration? What factors might have made you want to jump on the boat, and what aspects of life on the high seas (or in the unknown continents!) might have held you back?

Who explored where? What were the major accomplishments of people like Diaz, Da Gama, Balboa, etc.? Who gets credit for what 'daring deed'?

Finally---if you find yourself in trouble, you probably need to come and see me this week. PLEASE remember that I will drop you WP no matter what your midterm grade was, if you need me to do it. But after Friday, there is no 'forgiveness' from the registrar. You can figure your own grades and if your three grades so far are all VERY LOW (like below 60) you probably should consider dropping if you can. I'm not trying to run anyone off, but I am concerned that maybe a few people in this class are not being 'realistic' about their grades.

Please remember that your exam is scheduled for the Wednesday after Spring Break. This is necessary so that you will have a second exam grade before the last day to drop. I am very concerned that there are some people in the class who really should seriously consider dropping (I will give you a WP) because maybe they've just 'gotten off to a bad start' in Western Civilization this term and won't be able to bring up their grades. Like I've said many times in class, I am not trying to kick anyone out, but I do want everyone to pay attention to midterm grades and be honest with themselves about study habits, etc.

The notes for the exam will cover everything from John Calvin to Queen Elizabeth I (who I hope to talk about on Friday and a week from Monday).

The readings will be everything for Quiz 2 AND pp. 410-421, which deal with the Age of Exploration. I will post study terms for these pages soon! You would do well to check out the blog over Spring Break.

Important Information for Monday

As some of you know, I wasn't feeling week at the end of the week and I've spent the weekend feeling ill. I plan to come in to teach on Monday (tomorrow) but I will probably NOT be holding office hours. If you have any questions, please bring them with you to class, and if you need me to look over an exam or sign a drop slip, please bring that with you as well, and I will do it right after class. I don't need to be on my feet any longer than I have to be, but I also don't want to cheat you out of help if you need it!!!!

As I said in class, you can not do well on the first quiz without studying!

Also, please remember my suggestion that you read the two assigned chapters three times each. Some people have asked me how long this should take, or how many hours they should devote to studying. I really can't answer that question precisely---there's no formula that works for every person. But I think if you make good notes from the chapters and take good notes in class, you will do well.

Here are some things to be sure of:

Do you know what important things are associated with the kings of the Hundred Years war and the Renaissance?

Can you associate writers with their works? Artists with their paintings?

What things about the reading have surprised you? What made you stop and go---'wow, I didn't know that!'

Have fun studying. (Seriously, history is good for you!) I'll see you on Monday.

Course Objectives
This course is designed to provide students with a basic survey of the history of western civilization from the Renaissance to Napoleon. Students should be able to identify important personalities and understand how political, religious, social, economic and intellectual forces of this period helped shape the modern world. Students will also develop their skills in independent reading, writing, and in-class communication.

Course Relationship to History Department Goals
This course helps the history department reach its goals by covering the following dimensions of history widely perceived as crucial for a well-rounded view of the world:

*political developments
*significant intellectual movements and debates
*socio-cultural issues of race and ethnicity
* class
*gender

Students will also gain some exposure to how history is practiced by

*learning how history is interpreted
*assessing and critiquing arguments made by historians
*evaluating and using secondary sources; reading selected primary sources
*writing a critical thinking paper and using technology

During the course, students will issue issues that provide an important perspective on the contemporary world. The instructor will provide material in lectures and questions to help the students see the origins of many of the ideals and institutions that students often take for granted.

Class Attendance
Since this class revolves primarily around lectures, regular attendance is necessary for student success. Students who miss more than five days of class will receive an attendance warning. If a student misses more than six days of class, the student’s grade will be automatically dropped by one full letter grade.

Student absences are excuse for the following reasons:
Participation in a school-sponsored event, such as a field trip or a football game
Major personal illness
Death in the family

If a student knows that he/she will miss a day of class ahead of time, he/she should tell the instructor. A missed class without warning will require documentation, such as a letter from a doctor.

Any missed work, such as a quiz or exam, may be made up only at the professor’s discretion (during finals week) and will be in a different, much more challenging format.

Exams
Two exams and a final will be given. Each exam consists of objective questions (true/false, matching, etc) and subjective (essays). Material from lectures, readings, and quizzes will be covered.

Quizzes
Three quizzes will be given during the semester. Students should think of these as ‘mini-tests’. They will incorporate material from the readings and from the lectures (see schedule). A quiz missed for an unexcused absence may NOT be made up.

Paper
Students will write a 2-4 page essay based on a reaction to an assigned reading. (Reading TBA) Students will have some choice in the selection of the essay topic.

The paper will count as one quiz grade. It may not be exempted, though it may be dropped as the lowest grade if the student takes all three regular quizzes.

No grade will be given for any late papers!

Honor Code
All students are required to abide by the terms of the Wofford Honor Code. Students are encouraged to study together for quizzes and exams, but papers are solo projects. Quizzes and tests are also solo projects.

Classroom Etiquette
Wofford College students are expected to behave like young adults, not like refugees from high school! Students in this class will treat their peers and their professor with respect and courtesy! This includes arriving to class on time properly clad and TURNING OFF and STOWING all cell phones/ipods/etc. before class begins!!!!!

Final grades will be determined on the following formula:

Exam 1 = 25%
Exam 2 = 25%
Final Exam = 25%
Quiz/Paper Average (highest 3 grades of these assignments, paper not exempted though possibly dropped) = 25%

Here are some more things to think about as you study for Tuesday's exam. Please note that these are NOT necessarily the essay questions from the exam, but they are ideas that will help you study and write good essays for me when the time arrives!

What were the four major motivations before western imperialism in the 19th and early 20th century? (And don't just list them, be able to discuss them in detail!)

Can you tell me about the way Westerners made inroads into India, China, and Egypt? Who were the major players in dividing up Africa? What methods did Westerners use to subdue the continent and its peoples?

How did World War I get started and how did it shatter the world's illusions about war and peace?

I know this isn't American history BUT Wilson and FDR are very important to the story of western civilization! Review what you know about each man and his leadership in times of war and (in FDR's case) economic depression.

Who do you think has the 'hottest room in hell' for his inhumanity to man: Stalin or Hitler?

What is totalitarianism and how did dictators like Hitler, Stalin, and Mussolini rise to power?

Can you trace Russia's path from Revolution to the end of World War II?

Do you know the 'steps' to World War II?

Can you discuss the causes, the major battles/campaigns, and the outcome/significance of the War of 1812 and the Mexican War?

What forces drew Americans to the West, especially to Texas, Oregon, and California?

What are the myths and realities of the Old South? And of slavery?

What would the life of an average slave on a plantation have been like?

I would never ask you to discuss the entire Civil War, but could you describe factors that brought it about and advantages/disadvantages that each side held at the beginning? You should know the general significance of all of the major battles that we discussed in class. (You don't have to know dates, exact number of men killed, etc....)

Could you imagine joining a temperance society? What about the abolitionist movement?

HIS 102: Writing Assignment

OK, here's the setup for your writing assignment! Time to 'wake up' and start thinking deep thoughts about history and how you would use it to advise the most powerful person in the world!

President-elect Obama has summoned you to his office. He needs advice that will help him become a good president and leader of the free world. He asks you to answer a question based on the reading you have selected. Your job is to prepare your "Dear Mr. President" report in which you (as a smart student of history) summarize information and offer your thoughts on what can be learned from history. Your report should be neat (typed, in a reasonable font, with your name on it), concise (between 2-4 pages) and thoughtful. Please note that this is not a political assignment---you are not arguing for Democratic, Republican, Green, or any other viewpoint. You are simply, to the best of your ability, assisting the president-elect in learning the lessons and significance of history.

Choose the question you will answer based on the essay that you have read. You are not asked to do any further research! If you use a quote from the essay, then provide the page number. Use proper English; think that one day this paper may be in the National Archives.

Here are the questions. The paper is due on Monday, Nov. 17th!

HIS 102: Reading and Writing

It's now time to start thinking about your writing assignment. This will stand as one quiz grade. If it becomes the lowest quiz grade you can drop it, but you have to complete it! Since this is something you will have time to work on and think about, you should make a good grade.

I have several chapters from a book placed on reserve at the circulation desk in the library for this class. They deal with various issues in 19th and 20th century history. They are:

"The Lights Go Out"

Take a look at these chapters and choose one of them to read. They are all the same length!!!! But they deal with different subjects. Read the chapter and take notes. If you want to make a copy of the chapter, you are welcome to do so, but don't take the original out of the library.

After you have some time to read, I will give you a set of questions and you will pick a question to respond to. This will be a short essay, 2-3 pages in length. I will tell you more about it on Friday, or in the next blog post.

For now, please go to the library and pick a chapter to read and focus on! There are a lot of you in the class so please don't put this off until the last minute.

Also, start reading pages 462-471 and all of Chapter 25 for the next quiz.

HIS 102: IMPORTANT! READ BEFORE THE EXAM!

I hope everyone is studying hard for the test tomorrow. Don't forget to look at the previous blog posts for reading study terms and some questions to think about.

When you come in tomorrow, remember to sit somewhere than your usual chair and spread out. The sooner we get started, the more time you'll have.

Also---I had a spot removed from my right hand on Friday; it was to prevent it from becoming a skin cancer. I'm fine, but my hand HURTS! It is very difficult for me to even hold a pen. I know that many of you may want your test graded by Friday's class (last day to drop) so I will not write a lot of comments on the essays. If you want more, I will be glad to supply them in person, but it seems to me that the most important thing I can do is to get tests graded quickly for those who may be seriously considering dropping---and I just can't write for long stretches with a hurt hand. If you must have your grade before Friday, please write a big HELP ME on your test booklet and I will send your test grade to you on email.

I know that is a lot of material, but if you'll go back through these blog posts you will find lots of study terms from the readings to help you out.

Please don't forget that you can ask questions in class on Wednesday and Friday. Any review should be done then! If you feel too shy to ask a question in class, send it to me via the blog and I will bring it up.

The format is just like the last exam---10 matching, 22 IDs, and 1 out of 5 essays.

HIS 201: Book Review Talk

I've had a request to talk about the papers in class on Monday and I will be happy to do so! It will be helpful if you come up with some concrete questions as well; it's sometimes easier to answer questions than just talk in general.

But here are some points of reference for the review.

It should be between 2-4 pages in length. If you need to go longer, that's fine, but shorter is not!

It should have the bibliographic information about the book at the top, in place of a title. Example: Tracy J. Revels, Why I'm Awesome (Spartanburg: Wofford College Press, 2008). I won't require you to put all the stuff about pages, index, etc like you would for a review being published in The Journal of American History.

You do need some type of introduction. What is any writer's job? To keep the reader reading---you have to give the reader a reason to want to continue with your review. So that first paragraph needs to 'hook' the reader somehow. Writing must be SEXY!!!!!!!

Then you need to tell the reader what the book is about. This is a summary of the book's content material. Nothing says 'high school' faster than 'Chapter One is about her childhood, Chapter Two is about her days at FSU, Chapter Three is about her years at Wofford..etc.' So don't just list the chapters. If you want a quick lesson in how to summarize content, look at the blurb on a book's dust jacket or the description of a book on amazon.com.

Next you should do some analysis. Comment on the book's strengths and weaknesses. Here are some things you can think about if you're not used to doing this---does the author have a good argument, or tell an interesting story? Does the author make good use of sources, or rely on one source too often? Does the narrative flow? Is the book simply repetitive and boring? Just to say 'this book is dull' is not enough---you need to tell the reader why it is dull! And don't be afraid to take a strong stand. Even if it's a book that has won prizes, if you judge it to be a bad book, say so! Just always defend your assessment!!!!

Finally, you want to have some type of conclusion. Think of this as a final salute to your reader. You want to have 'payoff' for the reader's work in sticking with you. This is the place to put a final zinger like "even a college freshman could write a better book than this" or "this work is absolutely essential for understanding the incredible awesomeness that is Dr. Revels." One quick way out of a conclusion block is to ask yourself if you would recommend this to other students of American history.

Needless to say your review must be typed, double spaced, in a reasonable font, and neat. You also need to have your name on it and PLEASE have it stapled before you come to class. I also need you to send me a copy of it on e-mail.

What am I looking for? Here's a list:

1. A sense that you have actually read this book and given it some thought!

2. Basic, solid writing skills. If these reads like a first draft, with errors and misspellings and silly mistakes....beware!

3. Evidence that you have approached this with 'historical thinking'---i.e. subjected the material to analytical thought.

HIS 102: Some Questions To Think About

Here are some things you might want to have 'on your radar' as you get ready for the 2nd Exam:

Can you think of things that were big "failures" in this part of Western Civ. For example, the Frankfurt Assembly was a pretty big failures, wasn't it? Why? What other events might you add to the list?

Russia is a nation with a history that uses a lot of terms that are unfamiliar to the average student. Do you know what all of them refer to? For example---zemstrovs, "Russification," duma, Bloody Sunday, October Manifesto. Also, can you describe the attitude of each of the following tsars toward reform---Nicholas I, Alexander II, Alexander III and Nicholas II?

Are you a 'Romantic'? Or are you a "Realist'? What qualities would you need to possess to be either of these, and how would be your heroes?

Could you tell me the story or either Italian or German unification?

Could you trace the major events in France from the Revolution of 1830 through the end of the Franco-Prussian war?

Just some things to be thinking about and reviewing over the next two weeks!

I'm working on your exams now. I won't promise to have them ready tomorrow, but I would like an answer to this question---how can I make this blog better? I'm concerned that some people are either not using it or just not getting much out of it. Do you have any suggestions for me?

My big concern is that you have a very good grounding in the first half of American History because virtually all American history courses that are based in the pre-Civil War era draw from this class!

HIS 102: Chapter 23

One thing about this chapter---it has a lot of numbers in it! PLEASE don't let those numbers freak you out. You know that I would never ask you to cite a certain statistic unless I tell you in class that there is a certain reason why you should memorize it. I'm much more interested that you see the overall trends. What was happening in Europe in the last 20 years of the 19th century? What was this 'Second Industrial Revolution' all about? Was the population growing or declining? Was life getting better or worse? Was it a good or a bad time to be a woman? Why were there more schools than ever before? How did countries like England and Germany react to these changes?

Here are some terms you should know. Again, please don't stress out over numbers. Look more at the 'big picture' of how life was changing. You need to understand it so that you can better understand the 20th century---and then your own, 21st century.

HIS 102: Post-Quiz Breakdown and Study Advice

Here is the way the grades went:

A = 13 (wow!!!)

A- = 0

B+ = 3

C- = 4

D = 6

F = 10 (oh dear!)

I'll have the quizzes back for you on Monday. One thing I noticed is that there was a lot of fluctuation in grades from first to second quiz. Some people really went down while others really came up in terms of scores. Maybe some people got a little overconfident while others finally started taking the class seriously? Hmmmm...only each individual knows for sure.

Here's a piece of advice about studying; a couple of people have written to me wanting study tips and I'll try to address those issues right now. Here are some things that I can virtually guarantee will help you improve your grades:

1. Take me seriously and do the reading AT LEAST THREE TIMES. A lot of you rolled your eyes when I said that, but I think if you would try it, you might be surprised at how well it works.

2. Check the blog daily for study terms. Don't wait until the night before the quiz to print them out.

3. Review your notes for some time every day. Maybe you only have five or ten minutes, but just looking back over them on a regular basis would help built these terms into your 'long term' memory.

4. Spend some time looking at the maps and pictures in your text. I didn't require a map test, but maybe I should have. I think if you'll build some 'visuals' into your studying, it would help.

5. If you have questions, don't be afraid to ask them! You can write to me on the blog or on campus e-mail. Your question might be something I need to go over with the entire class!

6. If you find that you have severe trouble with anxiety or need help with test-taking skills, please go to the infirmary and ask for help. Trust me, they see this all the time. They can provide you with counseling and exercises that will help, or refer you to a doctor if your problem is really severe.

7. The most important thing I can tell you is that you have to learn time management skills and start studying earlier and more often! This is especially important if you have outside activities like sports, a job, or being in fraternities and sororities. Some of you have told me that you got really busy this week because so many classes had midterms. Well, guess what---when you get out into the 'real world' you will have 'crunch' periods as well! So you have to learn how to use your time wisely as much as you have to learn content material, right? This is all part of a good education.

Finally---talk to students in the class who are doing well. Ask them what their secrets are. You can learn a lot from your classmates. Just pretend that you're a Utopian Socialist and prefer co-operation to competition!

HIS 102: Answering A Common Question

People have asked about the study terms for authors/painters/musicians. Yes, you should know the person's name and be able to pair him/her with the work that was cited in the text or in class. I might ask you "Who wrote Frankenstein?" for example. (The picture in this blog is from an early edition of the book) You do not have to know a huge amount of detail, but it is important to be able to place these people in their correct movements---for example, don't confuse a romantic with a realist. You should also understand how/why these movements are different---romantics have very hopeful attitudes and often 'romanticize' things (make them better than they are) while realists want to show the 'nitty-gitty' and the way things actually are. Think about the time periods of these movements---all the idealism of the early 1800s versus the 'realpolitik' and the growing industrialization of the later 1800s.
